In 1829, Captain James Stirling established Perth as the Swan River Colony’s capital and primary administrative center. Stirling’s benefactor, Sir George Murray, had ties to Perth, Scotland. Therefore, the city was named after that location. Perth became an official city in 1856. However, the area under the Perth City Council’s jurisdiction is somewhat limited today and concentrated in and around the downtown area.
Most of the city of Perth is on the Swan Coastal Plain, between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. The town itself is in the South West Land Division of Western Australia. Transport Perth (Transperth) operates trains, buses, and ferries within the metropolitan area, while Transport Western Australia (Transwa) connects rural areas to the rest of the state. The city proper has 70 train stations and 15 bus terminals.
